Ultrasounds or ultrasonography is a technique used by doctors to check how the patient's baby is developing or to check the circulation of blood in a limb or your heart. It is a popular way to see what is going on in your body.
By sending high frequency sound waves, the ultrasound is able to use the echoing of them to make a picture of the limb or baby. It sort of uses echolocation like a bat, dolphin, or whale. Once the high frequency sound waves are sent by the probe they are either reflected by tissue or continue moving until they are reflected back to the probe. By using the length of the echoing and the points that the frequencies are reflected the machine can display a picture on the screen of what is going on in that section of your body.
Being able to see what is going on in your body can help predict when you are due for labor. By knowing this you can ready yourself for your incoming baby. Overall, ultrasounds work by using high frequency waves and the echoing of them, they are used by doctors to examine the development of the baby or the circulation of blood in someones limb or heart. This is what ultrasounds do to display a picture on a screen.
